re-potting roots

I leave Washington DC in just 10 days to relocate to Portland, OR.
I'm starting to get choked up, thinking about all of my friends here, all of the people I love. My stomping grounds, my watering holes, my sacred places.

Breathing heavy, heart pounding.
These moments are amplified as I watch the sand drop through the hourglass.

I'm taking myself, everything I've built, everything I've become, and planting it somewhere new in the hopes that I will continue to grow stronger and be nurtured.

I want to wrap my arms around DC and kiss it on the forehead.
I'll breathe my last goodbyes into the Chesapeake air over the next week.
Then it is time to be delivered into this brave new world I've chosen
and bloom brightly.

Yeah, I remember when I left Santa Monica/SoCal for PDX. 'Twas sad...and oh-so-exciting. I signed the papers for renting the house in PDX on 1/24/09 and didn't move 'til late March, so I had/took a long time saying my farewells. Besides visiting a mess of people (and mixing together a mess of groups of friends and fambily at a going away BBQ), I made a point of seeing the sun set into the Pacific a lot, hiking my fave hikes, visiting my fave restaurants, walking my trad'l routes, &c. Good memories and touchstones that I revisit when I return...

Happy travels/leavings/new beginnings!

I know you'll miss DC, but Portland is the greatest place I've ever lived. The food, the beer/wine, the music, culture, outdoors, etc, etc. It's amazing here. I've also met the greatest group of friends in my life, who have all moved here from other places in the country. Guess that's why it's called the "Portal-land."
Good luck with the move out. <3

Yes definitely let me know when you get into town and settled in a couple weeks. I'd be more than willing/happy to show you around and introduce you to lots of great people. Also, if you haven't already, join
"damnportlanders" LJ community. It's pretty essential for living in PDX and being on LJ. Also gives you lots of weird advice and funny things that kill time while working. Haha.

Yay good!

Well my friends and I have lots of little get togethers and things here. On Aug 1st my friend Emmy (a Leo..which my Virgo friend Tara likes to call "VIRGO-LIGHT") is having a bday party. If you don't have plans I'd love to bring you as my guest. :D
We're a very strange mix of Virgos/Leo's and Taurus's. Sorta strange how that happens.

oh also, although a lot of my time will be spent job-hunting, my friend Mitchell who lives in the house I'll be moving into, is going on tour from Jul 19 - Aug 8, so I'm kind of "alone" in the house for 3 weeks shortly after arriving into town, so I'll be super eager to socialize with all of the pdx-peeps i've been connecting with these last few weeks.

I hated the East coast the entire time I lived there, but still fashion a passing desire and bout of nostalgia to live in DC. Of all the seaboard, that's the spot to be.

It's quite the change. Even after time, that aloof shell and demand of competency and decorum still rears its ugly head. Some of that may never fully disappear, as I've learned.

How are you heading Westward? I do hope you have the opportunity to drive across the country. It's the best way to make the transition (and subsequent decompression).
